About this deal

Dick has a very soothing, melodious voice therefore, in my opinion, he is better at narration but Angel is so lovely that I enjoyed her parts just as much. Last time we sat inside and the glow from the red lights as the evening descended was really rather magical. Along the way you'll read glorious descriptions of rural life in France, with charming characters, delicious food and wonderful seasonal produce, together with the extraordinary list of renovations and restorations they completed, many of which were never shown on TV.

Born in Burma, but raised and educated in Northern Ireland, Dick Strawbridge retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2001 before becoming a full-time television presenter and author (with arguably the best moustache in showbusiness). Even with all Dick's engineering and DIY expertise, this maintained the encouraging anyone-can-do-it attitude. I did feel that the book was just a carbon copy of the first series, and even though it is a lovely book for fans, I was hoping for lots more like nuggets that was not featured on the channel four show.I have never seen this show before, and I didn’t think watching it would be a prerequisite, but I think this book is better suited to show watchers who are looking for more behind the scenes information. By the end of the story I envied the friendships and the possibilities that being brave enough to follow your dream could create.

Dick and Angel leapt into action transforming Château-de-la-Motte Husson into both a thriving family home and a sustainable business, and began making their dream of rural life in a fairytale castle a reality. As someone who has never seen it, I felt that it glossed over so many things and was really lacking detail in places I was really craving more. The book itself is wonderfully written, with witty anecdotes, fabulous recountings of this remarkable renovation, and the surprising addition of Dick describing his cooking (which sounds beyond amazing to me) it was the icing on the cake and now I want to try mussels. Reading the nitty gritty of renovating a château had me enthralled and learning about window glazing and kitchen benches was great hands-on advice. He is a man of many interests, some of which are reflected in his successful and varied television career.
